Eighteen years ago, I arrived in Atlanta from a little village in Haiti and was really broke. I moved into a two- bedroom apartment with my wife and our two kids. There was no way I could afford the ridiculous fees daycare centers were charging. And so, my wife had to stay home to take care of the kids while I worked at a K-mart warehouse making $145 a week.

To say the least, I just could not afford to have my apartment look as good as the neighbors. I remember driving all over Atlanta looking for some used furniture. Most of the stores I found had nothing but beat up and overly used furniture. The few that had something decent wanted an arm and a leg.

Unfortunately, I ended up buying from those high-priced stores. But it wasn’t until six years later that I realized that I had gotten ripped off–big time. You see, at the time, I could go to a new furniture store in Atlanta and get brand new pieces for the same price.

But hey, I was a new immigrant, and I didn’t know any better. By the way, there are still used furniture stores in Atlanta that are ripping people off today.

Yes, you might end up saving $40-$50, which is still a lot of money when your debts are high, and your income is low. But in my opinion, it would be to your advantage to just go to a brand name furniture store and buy new furniture.

Do you see what I mean? You simply can’t let people lure you into their stores by promoting low prices on used furniture because that’s when they start playing games with you.

Now that’s not to say that we don’t buy cheap. Of course, we are in business to make a profit. But we are not in the business of taking advantage of people because they may be going through some tough times.
